What are Ohio's CEU requirements?
In Ohio, continuing education requirements are critical for maintaining licensure for physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs). These requirements ensure that healthcare professionals remain current with the latest knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality patient care. Each profession has specific CEC requirements governed by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers (OTPTAT) Board.
For physical therapists (PTs), the OTPTAT Board mandates that licensed PTs complete 24 CECs (or contact hours) every two years as part of the licensure renewal process. At least 2 of these hours must focus on Ohio laws and rules relevant to physical therapy practice, ensuring compliance with state regulations. Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) are required to complete 12 CECs within the same period, with the same requirement of 2 hours dedicated to Ohio laws and rules. Similarly, occupational therapists (OTs) must earn 20 CECs (contact hours) every two years to maintain licensure in Ohio, with at least 1 hour focused on ethics, jurisprudence, or the laws governing OT practice in the state. Occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) must complete 12 CECs in the same timeframe, with 1 hour also dedicated to ethics or legal requirements. The remainder of CECs can be earned through courses, workshops, or seminars that are approved by the OTPTAT Board, covering topics that help practitioners enhance their therapeutic skills and stay updated on best practices. Professionals are responsible for keeping accurate records of their CEC activities and must ensure all courses or training are from OTPTAT-approved providers. Failing to meet these CEC requirements by the renewal deadline may result in penalties, including license suspension or fines. Ohio’s CEC requirements ensure that PTs, OTs, PTAs, and OTAs stay knowledgeable and effective in their practices, ultimately leading to better patient care across the state.
